Loud and clear.
There cannot be any other inaugural speech as loud and clear as this. I am not an American myself. Still, I was awaiting this day just to hear Obama address not just the United States of America. He is pragmatic, charismatic, and magnetic. In less than twenty minutes of his inaugural address, he was able to summarize the entire eight years of Bush's pitfalls. Even Bush has to try hard to summarize better.
I am not supporting Obama because he's black or half-black. I am not even bothered about his color. In my opinion, he has a brain and he knows how to use it at least. During the crisis, people need hopes. They need someone to say that they can. They do not need their President to disclose his plans to save the economic downfall in his inaugural speech. Obama came out with hopes. Those who heard him were charged completely in twenty minutes. And remember, Obama's speech has driven not just the USA. In fact, it is too early to rate Obama. But one thing is for sure, he can do nothing to worsen the current situation in America.
My European friends think the other way. To them, a white can lead better. I asked them to take Bush as an example. One of them went to the extent of saying "Obama's mother was white and he was brought up by his white grandparents". And hence he may lead better. I still say, so was Bush and he proved it wrong today.
The actual issue.
Why am I talking more about Obama? I am not yet another guy who blindly admires his audacity of hopes. But there's something more to it and something that makes me think about India.
In these sixty-two years, India had never produced young charismatic leaders. Except for Rajiv, I don't remember any other younger face in power. He came to the throne only because he was the then assassinated Chief's son. Looking at Indian politics today, we are far behind. I have a unresolved question from the day I saw the movie "Ayudha Ezhuthu" or "Yuva" (in hindi). A question that dwells in me for a long time now.
Is it possible for me to indulge in politics and become a Chief someday when I'm fifty?
To be clear, I am not thriving here for power. In my opinion, a lot more can be done with power. A lot more good. The generation of today can heal the pain of grief. I am ready to do at any cost following the hopeful words of Obama:
If I can do it, anyone can!

well..i didnot have a chance to hear his full speech, so i cannot comment on that..but i definitely believe that obama has great powers with him, and some knowledge to transfer his powers into something productive and useful.
Again, where does racism interfere with intelligence? Does it means that u make 10 ppl to stand in a queue, depending on their skin colour and their intelligence is of the same order? Blacks were brought as slaves and didnot have an opportunity to get educated..and overcoming all those barriors he is the president now, and that hardwork is made a history, and definitely not the colour of the skin
And one more, i definitely long for somebody young and energetic and good thoughts who would preside our nation, and its been a dream for me almost daily, believe it or not..i would definitely back u up if at all u are into politics.
i guess at this point its a bit too early to say if this guy can really change things .... but from the inaguration yesterday there are i guess too many religious ppl involved and that always is a bad sign. And ofcourse there is too much emphasis on race and color. I guess we just have to wait and see what's gonna happen
Thanks JSM for your thoughts.
Harish:
Firstly, being religious doesn't spoil the ideas in any way at least not in this century. Even Bush was religious.
Secondly, when an Indian goes to space from NASA, when an Indian wins Olympic medal, in India celebrations were and will be enormous. This is the same in America too. African-Americans celebrate the victory of their leader, who is the first to rewrite the history. If you have followed carefully, Obama never used his race "card" to gain victory. He is not a politician but a strategist.
Yes, those are exactly the thoughts that went through my mind after listening to the inaugural address - when will we get such leaders in India? And a related question, which I know you've been thinking about too - what is it that makes a developing country like India different from a developed nation like USA? Obama does inspire, and it makes my desire stronger to return to my country, so that I can give something back. But no, I don't think politics is my cup of tea; and I don't want to compete against you in the polls either :-) But seriously, our country needs some "thinking people" like you. All the best.
cpudoc(?):
I understand your question and it is not just in your mind. Every Indian feels the same. We have dreamed enough so far. Dreams alone can fetch you nothing today. We need action or an action plan at least. The answer to your question, in my opinion, is responsibility. Yes, it is our responsibility to get what we need. At this moment, a famous quote comes to my mind.
If you need a change, be one.
What you said is absolutely right, It will be written in the books of history that Obama is the first non white to lead U.S.A. The world is changing and in this current global crisis, obama will do well, "that is my hope".
Indian politics has always been ruled with deception and corruption, Yuva is a very inspiring movie, even in the movie there are characters, like the one played by madhavan. Who would make is difficult for someone to begin the clensing process.
India has a long way to go, the politics in India will change only when people look toward a person whole will make their life better and not someone who offers a bribe. I hope things change da mama...gud job...
arun i didnt follow obama's speech but onething i have noticed ,that much hype is going around him.may be we should wait for results rather than anticipating them.
as per indian politics i totally agree with you.our country needs someone young and charismatic in all ways.may be u should seriously give thought to your ideals!
I did not hear his speech fully Arun, My opinion on Indian politics is that, our nation should have , educated, straight forward people to lead us. That would surely bring out a BIG difference in our political scenario! So , I strongly recommend that u get yourself into politics, and do a bang-up job!
